As parents, it is important to enforce the habit of wearing Ortho-K lenses every night (or as much as possible, given certain circumstances), as well as encourage proper cleaning habits, such as daily cleaning with a specialized lens sponge and biweekly soaking in protein remover solution. Should these disciplines not be followed, there will be an increased risk of eye infection due build up of dirt on the lenses, as well as reduced effectiveness in controlling your child's myopia. If it is not possible for your child to follow the above steps by themselves, parents must be ready to step in to help clean the lenses. If that too is not possible, we highly recommend seeking other myopia control options that may be more suitable. During your clinical visits, we will teach you and/or your child how to wear and care for the Ortho-K contact lenses. Stellest uses H.A.L.T. (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target), a myopia-controlling lens design developed by Essilor. The lens features 11 rings formed by contiguous aspherical lenslets, with the center of the lens providing the wearer with clear vision. H.A.L.T.'s design is unique in that it provides a "volume of myopic defocus", meaning that the myopic defocus effect that halts myopic eye growth maintains efficacy and clarity at multiple viewing angles through the lens, such as when viewing things far away, close, or to the side. This gives the wearer more flexibility and ease of use, especially for children who may not always be wearing the glasses in the correct manner.

Using DIMS (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments), a patented technology jointly developed by Hoya and Polytechnic University of Hong Kong, the MiyoSmart lens provides vision correction while creating a myopic defocus effect, of which is the key to slowing myopia progression. This myopic defocus is created through a series of honey comb-shaped, +3.50D lenslets that surround the periphery of the central optical zone. With proper fitting and constant wear, the myopic defocus can trick the eye into halting myopia-causing eyeball growth. This happens without the user's awareness, as the central optical zone still provides unobstructed clear vision for day-to-day wear.

A 1 year study has shown that HALT lenses were able to slow down myopia progression in children by 67%, compared to children wearing single-vision lenses. Ongoing studies to this day have also confirmed that the lenses continue to be effective. We recommend this treatment for myopic children who are ages 6 and up. Most importantly, they must be willing to wear the glasses throughout the day at school and at home for the treatment to have maximum efficacy. Ortho-k is non-surgical, reversible, and removes the need to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day, where recreational activities and dust in the air can cause displacement and discomfort. Should there be a need to do so, the treatment can also be paused at any time. However, it is important that the patient learn how to properly handle, clean and store the lenses each time after wearing. Close compliance with these steps, as well as eye checks, will ensure the eyes will not become infected or scratched. As one of the first few clinics in Hong Kong to offer Ortho-K in the 90s, our treatment program is time-honoured and effective, as many of our clients can testify. Many of our adult clients today are still wearing their night lenses since childhood.

Ortho-K lenses are designed to be worn at night during sleep, during which it will reshape the soft cornea of the patient's eye. After taking off contact lenses off in the morning, the patient will experience clear vision without the need for eyewear. In addition to clear vision, Ortho-K contact lenses also form an imprinted "defocusing ring" on the cornea. This "ring" is what creates a myopia control effect, sending a signal to the eye to halt horizontal eye elongation. Both the clear vision and myopia control effect can last up to 16 hours before they start to wear off.

You gain the most benefit from wearing the Ortho-K lenses daily, every night before bed. This is important for effective myopia control in children and adolescents. Keep in mind that your clear vision will wear off over the course of several days if the lenses aren't worn during sleep.

Children 7 years old and up can start wearing Ortho-K, depending on their prescription. Adults up to the age of 70 are also potential candidates for Ortho-K lenses. Consider Ortho-K if you suffer dry eyes or irritation from day-time contact lenses, or simply want to enjoy daily life free of eye-wear.

Studies from The Myopia Research Centre of the Hong Kong PolyU found that, when compared to children who wear spectacles, Ortho-K can slow down Myopia progression by up to 50%. This makes Ortho-K great for safeguarding better vision, especially for adolescents during key development stages. Ortho-K is also great for adults those who want the convenience of clear vision without eye-wear during the day. This is especially convenient for sports and work environments with lots of dust and other eye irritants.

ACUVUE® Abiliti™ 1-DAY Soft Therapeutic Lenses are designed specifically to fit childrens' smaller eyes. The first 3 pairs of boxes will help children learn how to insert and remove the lenses through ascending levels of handling difficulty, from "Extremely easy", "Very easy" to "Easy". The lenses are also made out of silicone hydrogel, making them very breathable and with longer lasting moisture for extra comfort throughout the day.

Children as young as 7 years old can begin wearing ACUVUE® Abiliti™ 1-DAY Soft Therapeutic Lenses. The lenses can accommodate up to prescriptions from -0.50D to -8.00D.
